In the celebrity pro-am golf tournament held on Wednesday at Greystone Golf and Country Club in Hoover prior to the Regions Tradition, Kalen DeBoer and Nick Saban shared third place. Both of the Alabama football coaches’ groups had a score of 59.
Of course, the low scores—72 at Greystone, far below par—were not primarily the result of the two coaches. For the event, Saban was paired with Steve Stricker and DeBoer with Stewart Cink.
Before he teed off, Deboer remarked, “The one thing I know is that the fans will never be worried about me playing too much golf and (not) focusing on football after they watch what happens today.”
The two players lost ground to John Daly’s group.
Riley Green, a country music singer, former Auburn coach and US senator Tommy Tuberville, and radio host Bubba Bussey were among Daly’s famous amateur athletes.
The Daly team scored 52 on their first 18 holes. With that performance, the victory margin was four strokes.
Trent Dilfer, the head coach of UAB, and his team finished second with a 56 after 18 holes. Retief Goosen was teamed with Dilfer and company.
The group of Condoleeza Rice completed the top five, placing slightly behind the groups of DeBoer and Saban. When partnered with Mike Weir, the former US secretary of state concluded with a 60.
Kirby Smart of Georgia and Hugh Freeze, the head coach of Auburn, were not in the top five groupings.
David Toms and Padraig Harrington were teamed with Freeze and Smart, respectively.
Due to bad weather, the Regions Tradition event was postponed; it will now start at Greystone on Thursday. It is expected to continue until Sunday.
