Jeff Hafley was hired by the Green Bay Packers primarily with the intention of changing the team’s defensive strategy. The Packers have a history of underwhelming regular seasons despite having lofty preseason expectations.
The Green Bay Packers made significant progress in mending their safety room at last. For a few years now, the job has been problematic. Long-term answers for the Packers should come from signing Xavier McKinney and selecting Javon Bullard, Evan Williams, and Kitan Oladapo in the draft.
The issue is that expecting all three of the rookies to be able to contribute straight away is unrealistic.
Luckily for the Packers, safeties were not well-treated by the free agent market. Numerous well-known figures are still seeking housing. Justin Simmons, Quandre Diggs, and Eddie Jackson are still available.
Another player who might make sense for the Packers is Jayron Kearse. As a strong safety closer to the line of scrimmage, he performs at his best. That would free up Xavier McKinney to play center field, where he excels, and lead the secondary.
Kearse is a dependable tackler with a ton of experience playing for Dan Quinn, a strong defensive coordinator. While the Packers wait for their younger safeties to be ready to play, he will be a serviceable player who will provide a decent baseline of performance. He won’t have many spectacular stat lines or turnovers.
Don’t rule out adding more Safety personnel if doing so will make the position more competitive. The Packers enjoy bringing in as much talent as they can in order to select the best guy for the job. particularly if it’s a transaction that benefits the team.
