The Dominican reliever Yerry Rodríguez was acquired by the Toronto Blue Jays from the Texas Rangers. Josh Mollerus, a righty, will be acquired by the Rangers. The Rangers have sent Mollerus to their high-A club and Rodriguez to Triple-A Buffalo, both of whom are minor league bullpen relievers.
Rodríguez was DFA’d by the Rangers earlier this week. With this acquisition, the 26-year-old’s nine-year stay in the Rangers organization comes to an end. In 2022, Rodríguez made his MLB debut with the Rangers, beginning his main league career. Regretfully, he has not performed well in the previous three seasons. After working for the Rangers for just more than 30 innings, he had a 7.11 ERA. However, despite having tossed 17 innings this season, his problems have persisted. His ERA is 6.88. Similar to his strikeout total of 12, he has struggled with walks (11). He has also had issues with his walk rate while in the minors. With 151 career minor-league innings and an ERA of 5.42, it has climbed to 15.2% this season.

Though there is still work to be done, the Blue Jays’ acquisition of him seems hopeful. Given the current state of the Toronto bullpen, it is advantageous that he is a major-league relief pitcher. When it comes to injuries, assigning long-tenured reliever Tim Mayza, or other relievers having difficulties, Rodríguez is a reliable alternative that they can rely on. Despite moving to the bullpen and gaining the most experience as a reliever, Rodríguez has also started games as a starter. His ability to pitch multiple innings is another strength in the bullpen, which is why he would give the Blue Jays bullpen depth.
