Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk of the San Francisco 49ers has been the subject of trade speculations lately. Aiyuk has been associated with the Washington Commanders in several speculations.
To wrest Aiyuk away from the Niners, Washington would need to make this offer.
The best-case scenario for all parties would be to sign Aiyuk to an extension that would keep him in the Bay Area for the foreseeable future, notwithstanding all of the trade rumors around him.
It’s still unclear if that will happen.
Aiyuk recently stated that the Washington Commanders are the team he would most like to play for if he is not on the Niners the next season. Considering that the Commanders were last in their division a year ago, this is a little surprise.
Aiyuk did, however, cite LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels, who was just picked, as a major motivator for him to choose Washington. It seems natural that Aiyuk would want to catch passes from the former Heisman Trophy winner and No. 2 overall choice in the NFL Draft, given his potential.
But what would it take to close a deal of this kind?
The 49ers would need to receive an offer that totally blew them away since they have stayed steadfast in their desire to retain Aiyuk. The Commanders would only be able to make this happen if they traded up wide receiver Terry McLaurin along with their second-round selection in 2025.
Indeed, it’s a lot to give up from Washington. But the Niners cannot and should not trade Aiyuk for nothing. They still have to make every effort to maximize the potential of this core group of players because they are in a win-now mindset.
McLaurin is a very good wide receiver that head coach Kyle Shanahan’s system may use him in a hurry. Throughout the previous three seasons, the pass-catcher has been very reliable, starting every game and hauling in 75–80 receptions for 1,000–1,200 yards and four–five touchdowns.
It is very likely that Aiyuk will play for the Niners in the upcoming season. However, a deal for him to the Commanders would have to be at a high cost in order for the 49ers to remain competitive in 2024.
