Due to two important players suffering possibly significant injuries over the weekend, TCU’s cornerback room suffered. Due to an unexplained injury he sustained on Saturday, projected starter Avery Helm was unable to practice on Sunday. According to insiders, this might mean a prolonged absence for the Florida transfer. Last season, Helm played in all 11 games at full strength and finished second on the club with five deflections.
In the decisive 44-11 victory over the Cougars, he forced a sack and a turnover, which was his finest performance of the game. Head coach Sonny Dykes commended Helm earlier in the week for his increased influence and leadership on the field. According to Dykes, “Avery Helm is like a different person.”
“His maturity and confidence are admirable. He just possesses the qualities of the great ones. You must be self-assured and have faith in your abilities. That’s something Avery now knows, so I’m excited to see how everything works out. I adore the distance and the rivalry that exists there. Worse, on Sunday, Vernon Glover, a talented sophomore cornerback, was taken off the field due to a lower-body injury sustained during 1-on-1s. Glover followed a receiver during a session, and as the receiver fell down, Glover tried to avoid him on the ground, but his leg gave way.
Before receiving medical attention in the medical tent, he had to hobble off the field. Glover, a three-star recruit in the 2023 class, saw action in ten games, recording five tackles as well as his first-ever interception against Nicholls State. Glover was included in TCU’s dime defense scheme in the spring, perhaps taking a step forward. During the first five sessions, Glover spent a lot of time with the second team; but, if the injury is as serious as it seems, he may now lose a substantial amount of time. After practice number six on Monday, Dykes may provide an update during his press conference.
The Horned Frogs may be down to true freshmen Julian Knox and Devondre McGee, as well as JaTravis Broughton, LaMareon James, Channing Canada, and Jevon McIver Jr., depending on the severity of the injuries. The Horned Frogs should have hope that one of Broughton or James can temporarily replace Helm as they have both been among the standouts during training camp.
