The Jayhawks’ season opener against Lindenwood on August 29 will feature Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels from the starting lineup, as coach Lance Leipold said on Tuesday. Daniels’ chronic back discomfort caused him to miss much of the 2023 season, including the opening contest.
Leipold told reporters on Tuesday, “I’ll announce him as our starting quarterback; he will start the opener.” “Jalon Daniels hasn’t missed anything in the last ten days, and I’ve seen a lot of excellent things from him. He’s confident and has played well. He feels ecstatic. It’s encouraging to see that he is so enthusiastic, even though we all know how crucial it is for him to maintain his health.”
Although Daniels stated he felt well enough to play in the summer at Big 12 Media Days in July, the Jayhawks have been cautious in their offseason strategy with Daniels.
It’s hardly shocking that Daniels was named the starter, but it’s noteworthy that he will be back. He is among the best quarterbacks in college football when healthy. However, he has had persistent injuries throughout his career.
In 2023, he participated in just three games throughout the first three months of the season before dominating the rest of the way. During that time, he completed over 75% of his throws for 705 yards and five touchdowns, helping Kansas to a 3-0 record.
Daniels signed with Kansas in 2020, but he hasn’t played a full season since. In 2022, he played in nine games, which was his finest year. In addition to rushing for 419 yards and seven touchdowns, he completed his passing for 2,014 yards and eighteen touchdowns.
