To put it another way, Chris Hilton warmed up before LSU’s 34-17 victory over UCLA for the first time this season.
Hilton has improved, despite missing games while recovering from an ankle injury. Hilton is a redshirt junior wide receiver.
Hilton might make his long-awaited comeback against South Alabama on April 14th, when No. 14 LSU takes on the Bulls. If he does, LSU coach Brian Kelly feels he might provide another dimension to the attack.
Kelly stated, “I think we need Chris Hilton back, and it looks like this is the week we’re going to get him healthy again.” “I think it just gets better if we can add that vertical passing game, another element to it.”
LSU’s passing attack has been successful under quarterback Garrett Nussmeier’s direction. With 314 passing yards per game, the Tigers are ranked 13th in the US, and Nussmeier is tied for second with 13 touchdown throws.
Nussmeier passed the ball to nine different players versus UCLA, in contrast to the previous season when receivers Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas controlled the target share. With 25 receptions, tight end Mason Taylor leads the club in receiving yards, while five players have more than ten catches.
“Anybody can win it this year,” Kelly declared. “You add the tight end into the mix as your leading receiver right now, it’s very difficult to defend us. For touchdowns, the backs are catching it. A number of receivers and the tight ends. It’s a really intricate passing game.
Vertical improvement is the one area where LSU could go better. Nussmeier has averaged 7.8 yards per attempt, which ranks 59th nationally, while having excellent arm talent. Pro Football Focus reports that on passes longer than 20 yards downfield, he is 9 of 20. One notable exception was redshirt freshman receiver Kyle Parker’s 45-yard touchdown reception versus UCLA. Parker sustained an elbow injury in the season opener after moving up the depth chart. The touchdown was his first grab since then.
He performed admirably at camp, and I felt he was ready to take off. He then sustained an elbow injury. Thus, I was ecstatic when he made that catch. That will be really beneficial to him going forward.
