Breaking: Good News, Pirates Have Promoted Another Veteran Superstar To Make His Major League Baseball Debut.

The Pirates have announced the promotion of right-hander Mike Burrows to the active roster, while Jared Jones has been sent to the team’s Florida Complex League affiliate. Jones’ move is mainly administrative, as he recently completed his last start of the 2024 season and has already accumulated a full year of MLB service time in his rookie season.

Burrows, who was already on Pittsburgh’s 40-man roster, is expected to make his Major League debut in one of the Pirates’ final two games. Selected in the 11th round of the 2018 draft, Burrows was progressing well in the minors until he underwent Tommy John surgery in April 2023.

He began a rehab assignment in June and has posted a 5.26 ERA over 51.1 innings across three minor league levels. Notably, he has a 4.06 ERA, a 26.6% strikeout rate, and an 8.9% walk rate in 37.2 innings at Triple-A, where he started nine of ten games for Indianapolis. Although he has only reached the fifth inning twice due to workload restrictions, he threw 91 pitches in his last Triple-A outing on September 22.

CT's Burrows ready to return from Tommy John surgery
If Burrows appears in either of the upcoming games, he will officially become a Major League player, marking a significant milestone in his career. Looking ahead to 2025, the Pirates’ rotation is set to include Jones, Paul Skenes, Mitch Keller, and Bailey Falter, with Burrows competing for the fifth starter role or potentially serving as depth in Triple-A or as a swingman in the bullpen. Offseason trades or signings could further alter the roster dynamics, similar to the recent trade of righty Quinn Priester to the Red Sox for infielder Nick Yorke.
