Latest News; Good News As Grigor Dimitrov’s Journey In 2024, A Year Of Steady Progress And Achievements As He Is Set For Another World…
Grigor Dimitrov, Bulgaria’s highest-ranked tennis player, enjoyed one of the best years of his career at 33. While his career rejuvenation began in 2023, this season brought additional milestones, record-breaking achievements, and further successes, solidifying his place among the elite in world tennis.
“I feel like this is the best part of my career right now,” Dimitrov shared with Tennisportalen TV in October. “I am really enjoying it and making the most of it. I feel stronger than many players, which gives me an edge on the court.”
Year-End Ranking: 10
Dimitrov made a strong comeback to the Top 10 on April 1, marking his first return since November 2018. His impressive start to the season, with 20 wins in his first 25 matches and semifinal appearances in four of six tournaments, propelled him back into the elite ranks. His consistency throughout the year secured two significant milestones: on August 5, he began his 100th week in the Top 10, and he finished the year in the Top 10 for the second time, following his 2017 performance.
At 33, Dimitrov’s longevity is notable. After Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray retired in 2024, Dimitrov became the player with the most season finishes in the Top 20 (8), second only to Novak Djokovic (19). Djokovic, at 37, is the only player older than Dimitrov currently in the Top 20.
Titles: 1 / Finals: 5
In 2023, Dimitrov reached his first ATP final since 2018, and in 2024, he went one better, winning his first title since 2017 in Brisbane. He also reached four additional finals, making 2024 his third-most successful season in terms of finals played, behind 2017 (9) and 2014 (7).
Prize Money: USD 3,186,056
Dimitrov finished 8th in the ATP Tour for prize money earned in 2024, underscoring his consistent form and success this season.
Continued Excellence
Consecutive Grand Slam Appearances: 55
Dimitrov has achieved an impressive feat by not missing a single Grand Slam since the 2011 Australian Open. His active streak of 55 consecutive majors is the longest among current players, with Djokovic holding the second-longest streak at 51.
Consecutive Weeks in Top 100: 630
Dimitrov reached a milestone in February 2024, marking his 600th consecutive week in the Top 100, a streak that began in April 2012 and remains unbroken, excluding the COVID-19 ranking freeze from March to August 2020. This record is the second-longest on the ATP Tour, behind Djokovic’s 1,012 weeks.
Completing the Full Set
Dimitrov added another remarkable achievement this year. By reaching the quarterfinals at the French Open and the final at the Miami Open, he became one of the few active players to have reached the final eight in all 13 leading ATP events (the four Grand Slams and the nine Masters 1000 events). Only Dimitrov, Djokovic, Marin Cilic, and Daniil Medvedev have accomplished this feat since Nadal and Murray’s retirements.
Dimitrov’s run at the Miami Open was especially impressive. He defeated three Top 10 players—Hubert Hurkacz, Alexander Zverev, and Carlos Alcaraz—on his way to the final. This victory over Alcaraz also marked Dimitrov’s 40th career Top 10 win and his fourth victory over a Top 2 player. He lost in the final to Jannik Sinner.
A Historic Match
One of the highlights of the year occurred on September 17, when Dimitrov defeated Novak Djokovic in a thrilling match in Sofia. The 2-1 set victory over the greatest player in tennis history took place in front of a packed crowd at Arena Sofia. This memorable match came just a month after Djokovic won his first Olympic gold medal in Paris.
Goals for 2025
Although Dimitrov will turn 34 in May 2025, his ambition remains strong. With 459 career wins, Dimitrov is closing in on 500 Tour victories, a milestone only 15 players in history have reached. Djokovic, Marin Cilic, Stan Wawrinka, Richard Gasquet, and Gael Monfils are the only active players ahead of him. Dimitrov hopes to reach his 500th win in 2025, ideally with a title, and possibly even a Grand Slam victory.
“I think that’s what I’m looking forward to next season—continuing my form, adapting more, and becoming even more consistent,” Dimitrov reflected.
