Good News; Just Now Announced Another Commitment From Auburn Tiger After Losing Six…..
Kansas football has bolstered its roster with the return of defensive lineman Gage Keys, an Auburn transfer and former KU player. Keys, who was part of the Jayhawks’ program during the 2023 season, will have two seasons of eligibility remaining. His journey includes a medical redshirt earned during his time at Minnesota, where he started his college career.
During his one season at Auburn, Keys appeared in just two games, logging 18 snaps against Alabama A&M and New Mexico without recording any tackles. Most of his time with the Tigers was spent on the scout team. Despite limited action, Keys is excited to return to KU and make the most of his senior season.
“It just means a lot,” Keys told Phog.net. “I’m grateful they’ve given me the opportunity to finish my career the right way, be around positive energy, and make the most out of my last year.”
Keys initially transferred to Kansas in 2023 after three seasons at Minnesota. He played in every game for the Jayhawks during the regular season, contributing as part of the defensive tackle rotation. Over 301 snaps across 12 games, Keys recorded 21 total tackles and four quarterback hurries. Pro Football Focus ranked him 13th among KU defensive players in total snaps during the season.
The Ohio native emphasized the relationships and positive environment at Kansas as key factors in his decision to return. “The guys in the locker room, the whole program—how positive everything is—and the relationship with the coaches, it’s just different from everywhere else,” Keys said. “I’m excited to be back.”
Keys began his collegiate journey as a three-star recruit in the 2020 class, choosing Minnesota over programs like Indiana, Maryland, and Rutgers. He redshirted his first season and debuted on defense in 2022, playing 77 snaps over eight games.
Keys’ return to KU strengthens the defensive tackle group for the 2025 season, which includes D.J. Withers, Tommy Dunn, Blake Herold, Marcus Calvin, and Josiah Hammond. Kenean Caldwell could also return, though he participated in KU’s senior day. Keys’ connection to KU defensive tackles coach Jim Panagos, who also recruited him to Minnesota, has been a consistent factor throughout his career.
