Exciting; Red Sox Secure A Superstar In $130M Deal, Leaving AL West Up For Grabs

After extensive speculation, Alex Bregman has signed with the Boston Red Sox on a three-year, $120 million contract, with opt-outs after each season. ESPN’s Jeff Passan noted deferred money in the deal, adding complexity to the move.

Bregman’s addition suggests a shift to second base in Boston, as Rafael Devers remains the franchise’s third baseman. While Bregman might be the better defensive choice at third, Devers will likely make the final call.

Offensively, Bregman’s pull-hitting style should adapt well to Fenway Park’s Green Monster, easing concerns about leaving Houston’s Minute Maid Park.

This acquisition is significant for Boston, with Bregman projected to contribute a 4.0 fWAR season. His presence strengthens the lineup, crucial in the competitive AL East.

Meanwhile, Bregman’s departure leaves the AL West wide open. The Rangers and Mariners are projected for 85 wins, the Astros 84, and both the A’s and Angels at 76 wins.

The Oakland Athletics could surprise in this tight division. They’ve bolstered their rotation by signing Luis Severino and trading for Jeffrey Springs. JP Sears, Osvaldo Bido, and Mitch Spence round out the staff, offering potential stability.

Bido’s breakout August performance, with a 1.55 ERA, raises hopes for 2025, while Spence, who transitioned from bullpen to starter, is projected for a 4.35 ERA.

The A’s could also rely on offense, with Brent Rooker and Lawrence Butler forming a potent duo. With no dominant team in the AL West, Oakland may find opportunities to contend.
