Just In; Djokovic Dominates Dimitrov, Moves One Win Away from Historic 100th ATP Title At Miami Open
Novak Djokovic put on a dominant display in front of an elite audience, including football legend Lionel Messi, to defeat Grigor Dimitrov 6-2, 6-3 and secure a spot in the Miami Open final for the first time since 2016.
With this victory, Djokovic is now just one win away from reaching 100 career ATP titles, a milestone only three other male players—Jimmy Connors, Roger Federer, and Ivan Lendl—have ever achieved.
At 37, the Serbian star, currently ranked world No. 5, comfortably handled Dimitrov in what was the oldest ATP Masters 1,000 semi-final ever. Though Dimitrov initially broke Djokovic’s serve in the first game, the 24-time Grand Slam champion responded immediately and took control, winning five consecutive games to claim the first set.
Despite the windy conditions, Djokovic maintained his precision, making just five unforced errors compared to Dimitrov’s 32. His strategic play and consistency proved too much for his opponent.
Acknowledging the challenges posed by the wind, Djokovic explained that he aimed to force Dimitrov into longer rallies, knowing it would disrupt his rhythm. His strategy paid off as he secured yet another milestone, becoming the oldest ATP Masters 1,000 finalist at 37 years and 10 months.
Now, with history within reach, Djokovic reflected on the significance of chasing his 100th title. Since winning his 99th at the Paris Olympics, he has been working to find the right form to claim another major trophy. Confident in his preparation and performance, he emphasized his excitement for the final, having yet to drop a set in the tournament.
Dimitrov, who had previously reached the Miami Open final, once again fell short. After a strong start, he struggled to maintain his momentum, especially following an incident where a fan was ejected for distracting him. Djokovic’s dominance left little room for a comeback.
Djokovic will now compete in the final against either Czech youngster Jakub Mensik or American Taylor Fritz, whose semi-final match is set to take place later.
