Sad News; Lions’ Sam LaPorta Opens Up on Another Five-star Exit: ‘It Hurts, But The Future Is
The Detroit Lions are experiencing a significant transition this offseason, with key roster changes and coaching shifts shaping the team’s future. Among the most impactful departures is former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who has taken the head coaching role with division rivals, the Chicago Bears. While fans and players anticipated this move, it doesn’t lessen the emotional toll of his exit.
Sam LaPorta Reflects on Johnson’s Exit
At the 2025 NFLPA Classic Golf Tournament, Lions’ standout tight end Sam LaPorta opened up about Johnson’s departure during an interview with FanDuel TV’s Kay Adams. LaPorta admitted that parting ways with his former OC has been tough, given the deep bond they built over the past seasons.

Despite the emotional departure, LaPorta remains optimistic about the Lions’ future under their new coaching staff. “It’s an exciting time for us as well. We have a bright future with our new staff,” he added, signaling confidence in Detroit’s direction.
Johnson’s Influence on LaPorta’s Success
For LaPorta, Johnson played a pivotal role in his development. Since being drafted in 2023, LaPorta has thrived under Johnson’s system, amassing 1,615 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns in just 33 games. His performance has already earned him Pro Bowl and All-Pro second-team honors—achievements that reflect Johnson’s impact on his growth.
A New Chapter with OC John Morton
While adjusting to change is never easy, LaPorta is eager to work with new offensive coordinator John Morton. He has already met with Morton briefly and is looking forward to building a strong working relationship.
“I’ve only spoken with him for about 10 or 15 minutes, but I got to know him personally,” LaPorta said. “As a coach, we’ll see how things unfold, but we’re all excited about the future.”
With high expectations for the 2025 season, the Lions are focused on maintaining their momentum. Currently holding strong Super Bowl 60 odds at +950, Detroit is determined to prove they can thrive even in Johnson’s absence.
