Departure: Iowa Veteran Star Quarterback Enter The Transfer Portal

Quarterback Deacon Hill signed through the transfer portal on Tuesday, having started nine games for Iowa in the previous year.

A transfer from Wisconsin to Iowa during the offseason after initially committing to Fordham, Hill replaced the injured Cade McNamara, who finished the season with a season-ending injury. Hill completed 122-of-251 passes for 1,152 yards, five touchdowns, and eight interceptions.

McNamara and Marco Lainez III are Iowa’s two scholarship quarterbacks presently on the team. In addition to adding James Resar, a four-star quarterback, this summer, the Hawkeyes plan to recruit a quarterback through the transfer portal in the spring.

As Kirk Ferentz put it in October 2023, “the biggest thing is him just trying to take in what he needs to take in” about Hill. Every week presents a new task with a distinct set of preparations. He performed admirably. He pays attention. He is an intelligent man. That’s really the essential component of everything. I believe he’s picking up on the proper stuff. It’s simply a matter of time before each repeat helps him, and now game reps will undoubtedly benefit him too.”

Iowa has to have 85 scholarships before fall camp begins in August, as it now only has 88.
