**EDMONTON — Leon Draisaitl has expressed his desire to be an “Oiler for life” after signing a landmark eight-year contract extension with the Edmonton Oilers. Announced on Tuesday, the deal has an average annual value of US$14 million, making it the highest in NHL history.**
“I can’t imagine wearing a different jersey,” said Draisaitl, who had an impressive season with 41 goals and 65 assists, totaling 106 points in 81 regular-season games. He also excelled in the playoffs, contributing 10 goals and 21 assists in 25 games, which helped the Oilers reach the Stanley Cup final for the first time since 2006.
As he was set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer, this extension marks a crucial step in securing his future with the team. According to TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun, the deal is front-loaded and includes a full no-move clause throughout its duration.
General Manager Stan Bowman noted that while securing Draisaitl was a top priority, he faces additional challenges ahead. Key players like defenseman Evan Bouchard and three-time MVP Connor McDavid will also be up for contract discussions in the coming years. McDavid, currently on a $12.5 million-per-season deal that ends after the 2025-26 season, is expected to command a significant raise.
“Players like Leon are irreplaceable,” Bowman stated. “There aren’t many who can play at his level. He’s a vital part of our team, and we need to keep him.”
Draisaitl’s new contract comes after a previous extension he signed in August 2017, which has been seen as one of the NHL’s best value deals. Since being drafted third overall in 2014, he has amassed 347 goals and 503 assists for 850 points in 719 regular-season games.
While some may see his $14 million cap hit as justified, Draisaitl understands the need for balance between maximizing his earnings and allowing the team flexibility to build a championship-caliber roster. “It’s a fine line,” he remarked. “You can’t win with just a few players. I’m glad to have this done so I can focus on improving my game.”
