Good News; Coach Ryan Day Announced Ohio State’s Recruiting Priorities Beyond Quarterback: Focus on the Trenches
As the offseason unfolds, one thing is clear: Ohio State is looking to fortify its roster, particularly in the trenches. While quarterback might not be the top priority, the Buckeyes are making a concerted effort to address their needs on both sides of the line, starting with the defensive front.
The Buckeyes recently hosted Michigan State defensive tackle transfer Derrick Harmon, signaling their intent to bolster the defensive line. But Harmon isn’t the only potential addition. Ohio State is keeping an eye on several big names in the transfer portal, especially from Texas A&M’s deep pool of talent. Defensive end LT Overton is a standout target, with 247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong reporting that the Buckeyes have already initiated contact.
Other intriguing options include Texas A&M defensive tackle Walter Nolen and Middle Tennessee State’s Marley Cook, the latter of whom already holds an offer from Ohio State. These additions could provide the depth and playmaking ability the Buckeyes need to dominate in the trenches next season.
On the offensive side, Ohio State is equally focused on shoring up its line. One name generating buzz is Texas A&M offensive tackle Chase Bisontis. Before committing to Texas A&M, Bisontis had strong interest in Ohio State, and the Buckeyes may have a chance to bring him into the fold this time around.
Bisontis had a challenging freshman season, surrendering 30 pressures and four sacks, according to Pro Football Focus. While those numbers may raise concerns, they also reflect Texas A&M’s broader struggles, as the team ranked 128th nationally in pressure rate allowed. Despite these hurdles, Bisontis earned Freshman All-American honors, showcasing his potential to develop into a cornerstone player.
Beyond individual players, Ohio State’s focus on the trenches underscores a larger strategy. Dominance at the line of scrimmage has long been a hallmark of championship-caliber teams, and the Buckeyes are no exception. With the departure of key players and the need for greater consistency, adding proven talent through the portal could be the difference-maker in 2024.
While the quarterback position often grabs the headlines, Ohio State’s emphasis on the offensive and defensive lines demonstrates a commitment to winning where it matters most—up front. Whether it’s pressuring opposing quarterbacks or protecting their own, the Buckeyes know that games are won and lost in the trenches.
