Breaking; Georgia Tech Basketball Teams Up to Tackle Childhood Illiteracy with Fight for Literacy Game
Georgia Tech men’s basketball is stepping up to support the fight against childhood illiteracy by hosting a Fight for Literacy game against Stanford on February 12 at McCamish Pavilion. This initiative, part of a larger national movement, combines the influence of college basketball with efforts to promote literacy and improve access to books for young children.
In conjunction with the game, Georgia Tech is inviting fans to contribute to the cause by donating new or gently used books suitable for children under the age of six, particularly for infants and toddlers. All books collected during the event will benefit the Atlanta Children’s Day Shelter, a local organization dedicated to supporting underserved children.
To encourage participation, fans who bring a book donation will receive a $5 discount on their ticket for the 7 p.m. game. The discount is applicable to tickets at all price levels but is limited to walk-up purchases at the box office on game night. Donation bins will be conveniently located outside the security checkpoints at each entrance to McCamish Pavilion, ensuring fans can easily drop off their contributions.
This event is part of a nationwide effort spearheaded by Champions for Literacy, an organization that partners with college basketball programs to promote literacy awareness through special game-day events. These Fight for Literacy games aim to highlight the importance of childhood literacy and provide communities with actionable ways to address the issue.
The Fight for Literacy campaign uses the broad appeal of sports to shine a spotlight on the literacy crisis affecting children across the country. By hosting these events, teams like Georgia Tech contribute to raising awareness and funds while encouraging their communities to take part in addressing this critical need. Donations collected at these events are directed toward local organizations, ensuring that resources are distributed where they are most needed to help children develop essential reading skills.
Through this collaboration, Georgia Tech men’s basketball is not only supporting a vital cause but also inspiring fans to make a tangible difference in the lives of children. By simply attending the game and donating a book, fans can contribute to a brighter future for young readers in the Atlanta community. Together, the Yellow Jackets and their supporters are making strides toward combating illiteracy and ensuring every child has access to the tools they need for success.
