In the United Football League encounter between the St. Louis Battlehawks and the D.C. Defenders on Sunday, quarterback AJ McCarron will not be on the field.
Despite not missing any plays in the team’s 30-26 loss to the Birmingham Stallions the previous week, McCarron’s participation for St. Louis’ Week 8 match is uncertain due to an ankle injury he suffered in the fourth quarter.
The former All-American from Alabama is listed as an inactive player for the Battlehawks’ game on Sunday. Manny Wilkins is listed as the starting quarterback for St. Louis versus the Defenders, while Brandon Silvers, a former standout at Troy and Gulf Shores High School, is listed as the backup.
This season, McCarron has completed 154 out of 231 passes for 1,467 yards, 14 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions. Prior to Week 8, the former standout player from St. Paul’s Episcopal had four more touchdown passes than any other player in the United Football League.
Wilkins had just one appearance this season, on April 28, in St. Louis’ 45-12 victory against D.C. With two running attempts for 11 yards, including a score, he cleaned up. Although Silvers hasn’t played yet this year, he started eight games for the Houston Roughnecks in the previous year.
The Battlehawks would guarantee one of the two postseason places in the XFL Conference with a victory over St. Louis on Sunday.
At 5-2, the Battlehawks and the San Antonio Brahmas are tied for first place in the league. On April 14, St. Louis beat San Antonio 31–24; the clubs will play again on June 1 to wrap off the 10-week regular season.
